Google Gets Into Business Of Building Web Sites
Google is debuting a free application aimed at businesses called Google Sites that is set up to simplify online team collaboration. The service is an addition to Google’s online application suite and enables users to easily create a Web site, including embeddable text, pictures, spreadsheets, calendars and video from Google’s YouTube Web site. Users can select from a variety of templates, but cannot yet fully customize the look and feel of the Web site. Google Sites is the latest move by Google to challenge Microsoft’s desktop software application business by offering a similar, yet free product. The Google Sites service represents a challenge to Microsoft’s SharePoint, which charges licensing fees and is also aimed at businesses. The Google application is easily accessible from anywhere with an Internet connection unlike Microsoft programs that are typically installed on individual computers. Google Sites was built on top of technology created by JotSpot, a startup acquired by Google in 2006
Microsoft Buys Israeli Advertisement Targeting Company YaData
As Google makes moves into Microsoft’s software applications business, Microsoft moves to try to gain a larger share from Google in the online advertising space. In a move toward that goal, Microsoft has acquired Israeli start-up YaData for a reported $20 to $30 million. YaData technology works to enable Microsoft advertisers to better target customer segments in more efficient and engaging ways, while at the same time providing customers with more relevant advertisements.
