Google Analytics Adds Industry Benchmarking and Data Sharing
Google has announced the addition of two new features to its Analytics program, including a beta version of industry benchmarking and an optional data-sharing setting. Industry benchmarking gives Analytics users insight into how their Web site, in terms of metrics, is performing against other Web sites in the same industry. The new feature also gives users the ability to compare site performance against a different industry vertical, to provide data that can help businesses forge traffic generating relationships, for instance. Google Analytics users are encouraged to opt in to include their Analytics data, which is sorted by industry, anonymized and aggregated to make the benchmarking feature possible.
Microsoft displayed a new social media project at a TechFest press event, called Blews, which stands for blogs and news, an application that’s different from the typical news aggregator that clusters stories according to topics, by taking the political blogosphere into consideration when organizing the stories. Using the Live Labs Social Media platform, that analyzes both links and text in real time, Microsoft’s Blews categorizes news stories based on which political blogs, conservative or liberal, are linking to the stories and takes discussion surrounding the topic or story into consideration. Blews also enables readers to see different views on the same story from different sides of the political spectrum.
