China Blocks YouTube, Other Web Sites, Bloggers React

Following protests that erupted on Friday in Tibet, against Chinese rule, a number of Web sites including video sharing site YouTube, photo sharing site Flickr, Wikipedia, and Yahoo News have been blocked in an effort by the Chinese government to censor the broadcast of news surrounding the incident. Other Web sites, including Google News, have keyword filters restricting Internet users in China from accessing information related to the events. Blank and stalled pages have not been entirely successful at preventing discussion surrounding the protests, with the widespread availability of online chatrooms, bulletin boards, and Web logs, citizens have had more opportunity to air their opinions publicly, even as censors rush to remove the offending comments. Leaders in China encourage its 210 million Internet users to use the Web for education and business, but condemn Internet use for access to material considered subversive or pornographic.
