China Tightens Grip On Video-Sharing Sites
Web surfers in China were recently blocked from accessing video sharing Web site YouTube after videos about the Tibet protests appeared on the popular U.S.-based site. In the most recent attempt by authorities in China to block sensitive material, the government has shut down 25 video sharing web site operations and cited a dozen others. Officials in China are clear about stringent rules restricting Web sites from airing video content deemed pornographic, violent or a threat to national security. The latest move, coupled with the Chinese government only licensing new video sharing sites if they are state owned, could turn away future investors and in turn capitalization opportunities for China’s rapidly growing 210 million Internet users.
Online Ad Sales Network QuadrantOne Gains 26 Newspaper Affiliates
26 newspaper publishers said Thursday they are joining advertising sales network QuadrantOne as affiliates, bringing the total number of participating newspapers to 250. QuadrantOne was started last month by Gannett, Tribune, Hearst, and The New York Times with a goal of simplifying the process used by large brand advertisers buying national advertising on a large scale, without having to deal separately with each local media outlet, while also helping the founding media companies and affiliates compete with national portals for ad dollars. Under the partnership, newspapers and TV stations set aside a percentage of their website ad space for ads sold by QuadrantOne. The local websites will get a portion of the revenue from ads placed on their sites by QuadrantOne.
Google Analytics last month released a benchmarking tool, enabling Analytics users to gain insight into how their Web site, in terms of metrics, are performing against other Web sites in the various industries. Starting yesterday, Google announced that Analytics users can view Benchmarking Industry data populated in Google Analytics. The search leader said the number of verticals and the quality of data will most likely improve as more customers enable the new benchmarking feature, which anonymously shares Google Analytics data with Google products and the benchmarking feature to fuel the service.
