Google Offers Offline Docs Capabilities
Google is taking steps to enable users of its Google Docs Web based software to benefit from the ability to write, edit, and store word processing documents offline, and to later synch and store changes to a main online version once an Internet connection is established. The feature will start rolling out slowly over the next few weeks and will be available to anyone with a Google Gears --compatible browser-- IE and Firefox for Windows users, Firefox for Mac users, and Firefox for Linux users. Google users must install Google Gears to get the offline functionality. The feature will initially only work with the Google Docs word processor program, though Google is working to introduce a similar feature for all applications in the suite, including spreadsheets and presentations. The new feature aims to make Google a more viable option to rival Microsoft’s Office portfolio offerings.
In an effort to tap into the popularity of social networking games, AOL has teamed up with Cellufun, to provide an ad-supported mobile phone gaming portal. The mobile advertisements, which will consist of banner ads, will be supplied by AOL’s Platform A Third Screen media. Cellufun, founded in 2005, has attracted 5 million unique visitors to its games in the past year along with 500,000 registered users. Cellufun hopes that with the new AOL collaboration, it will continue to see strong growth. AOL will offer Cellufun’s popular game titled Call of the Pharaoh that relies on a social networking “pyramid scheme” to complete the game.
