Yahoo's Flickr Announces Video Sharing Capability
Yahoo’s Flickr has extended its photo sharing services to offer video sharing capabilities. Flickr pro members, who pay a yearly fee of $24.95, can upload 90 second clips of personal video footage and set their privacy settings for friends, family or everyone to be able to view them. Although Flickr will charge to place videos on the new service, anyone can watch them for free. Flickr will make the service available in eight languages including English, French, German, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish and traditional Chinese.
Major Yahoo Shareholder Legg Mason Speaks Out On Microsoft
If Microsoft lowers its buyout offer for Yahoo, second largest Yahoo shareholder Legg Mason portfolio manager Bill Miller says he will support the efforts of Yahoo to remain independent. Mr. Miller points to a letter sent by Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer to Yahoo threatening a hostile takeover at a price lower than Microsoft’s original offer. At a time when gaining Yahoo shareholder support is important, a move to take something away from shareholders is not a way to gain their support, Mr. Miller points out. He went on to say Microsoft could have won the support of Yahoo shareholders by sweetening its bid, not threatening to lower it. Yahoo's directors have rejected Microsoft's offer as too low, and in a letter responding to Mr. Ballmer Monday they called his ultimatum "counterproductive."
Video search engine Blinkx, powered by Autonomy’s idol software, has signed five online advertising deals, including three with television programmers and at least two with Web sites. The revenue-sharing deals will involve displaying contextual ads, delivered by Blinkx’s adHoc Platform, with online video that will be searchable and viewable on Blinkx. Partners include Zodiak International, HIT Entertainment, The Guardian, Kitchen Caravan Web site, and others.
