Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft Continue To Dance

Yahoo is reportedly one step closer to forging a deal with Google to provide search advertising services, following a successful week long test that yielded positive return from Google’s adSense advertisements on Yahoo’s search pages. Assuming Google and Yahoo could avoid potential regulatory problems, Google’s system, which generates more revenue for each search query than Yahoo’s, could increase Yahoo’s cash flow significantly if the firms move forward with a partnership. In other areas, a search ad-deal could complicate Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to acquire Yahoo. According to analysts, the Yahoo-Google deal estimates an increased cash flow of $1 billion a year for Yahoo. Microsoft, already faced with having to spend additional money to retain key Yahoo employees in the event of a successful takeover, could face further assertions that Yahoo should be valued at more than Microsoft offered, making the potential transaction even costlier.

FCC Continues Address Of Net Neutrality

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin will preside over a second hearing, to be held today, regarding whether phone and cable companies can deliberately slow or block certain Internet traffic, and will also address companies’ responsibility for providing more consumer disclosure about what services consumers can expect for the amount of money they pay. Efforts to set up more defined regulations about net neutrality come as a result of accusations against Cable provider Comcast, which was deliberately slowing some traffic by users of file-sharing service BitTorrent, according to file sharing company Vuze and consumer advocates which filed complaints with the FCC. Recent Comcast efforts have not wavered Martin’s interest in enforcing the FCC’s net neutrality stance.
