Yahoo Reports Strong First Quarter Financial Results
Yahoo, which is fending off a takeover by Microsoft, reported its first-quarter profit rose to $542 million, boosted by a $401-million investment gain related to Alibaba.com's IPO, compared to $142 million for the same period of 2007. CEO Jerry Yang said Yahoo, which is trying to convince shareholders that Microsoft's offer is too low and undervalues the company, is "beginning to realize the benefits of the very substantial and deliberate long-term investments we've made."
Google has announced the release of a new developer sandbox for iGoogle that includes support for developers OpenSocial APIs, with guides on how to build and distribute gadgets to iGoogle’s growing audience. The sandbox enables developers to try building new iGoogle applications not available to the general iGoogle user population. iGoogle's new developer features will include left navigation, a maximized or "canvas view" option for gadgets, and social features for gadgets using the OpenSocial APIs. These social features for gadgets will include a friends list and activities displayed through a special updates gadget.
Yahoo will be rolling out some changes to its crawling, indexing, and ranking algorithms over the next few days, according to the Yahoo Search blog. Until the update is completed, site publishers are able to check in to Yahoo over the next few days to see if their websites endured ranking changes or page shuffling in the index. Part of the update included a fix for an issue being reported by several webmasters to Yahoo, in which some encountered problems deleting URLs from Yahoo's Site Explorer.
