Yahoo Y!Open Strategy, Search Monkey Development Platform Launches In Beta
Yahoo has announced its plan to roll out what its calling its Y!Open strategy in which it will open its platform to outside developers, allowing them to create applications across its network of sites, as well as intertwine its online services so that users can manage all information about their identities on all Yahoo’s properties in a single place and share it with friends across the Web, similar in style to popular social networking sites. As a first step, Yahoo on Thursday announced the opening up in beta test form of its Search Monkey development platform, which lets external developers customize Yahoo search result listings specific to a certain URL, which includes modifications to the title, description, and additions such as an image. Yahoo users can install developers applications to access modified search results, that aim to deliver more relevant results richer in information. Yahoo! says Search Monkey will be available to everyone in a few weeks.
As a result of yearlong efforts, including rebranding and redesign, AOL’s content Web sites had an all time high in unique visitors and traffic in March, according to the company, accounting for six consecutive months of growth. Page views to the sites, which include Money & Finance, News, Sports, Health, Food, Music, Games, and Moviefone, among others, were up 35% over the last year and unique visitors rose 15% to 56 million, according to research firm comScore. The boost may help AOL with its goal reinventing itself as a major digital ad sales firm, in which AOL will monetize its content through its Platform A advertising unit. Platform A recently became the top U.S. advertising network by reach.
