Yahoo Teams With McAfee To Offer SearchScan Security

Yahoo is integrating security firm McAfee’s SiteAdvisor technology into its search engine to warn users in the U.S., U.K., Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand if they are about to click on a Web site that hosts viruses, spyware or spam. The service, called SearchScan, will be switched on by default and alerts users who search the Internet using Yahoo with a red exclamation point and a warning next to any links McAfee has identified as serving dangerous downloads or using visitors' e-mail addresses to send out spam. Web sites that attempt to automatically install malicious code on visitors computers by exploiting flaws in their Web browsers will be automatically dropped from Yahoo search results. Yahoo and McAfee hope the move will help limit users' anxiety about accidentally clicking on malicious links.

Google Seeks To Secure Pledge From Verizon’ Regarding 700MHz Open Access

Verizon Wireless was the winner of the nationwide C block of 700MHz of spectrum auctioned by the Federal Communications Commission in March. As part of the sale, the FCC outlined open access rules that require the winner of the C block to allow customers to connect wireless devices of their choosing and run any applications on the network using the C block. Google has expressed concern that Verizon Wireless will not honor the open access conditions and filed a Petition to Condition Grant asking the FCC obtain a pledge from Verizon Wireless that it will honor the conditions before selling the spectrum to the carrier. Google wants the agency to make Verizon promise to adhere to the C Block rules—in writing and to ensure Verizon understands the license obligations.
