Google Annual Meeting Held Thursday
In its annual shareholder meeting held Thursday, Google discussed recent advancements that have taken place at the search company. Kicking off the Google meeting was an announcement that shareholders had re-elected the company's 10 board members. Two shareholder proposals were voted down regarding censorship on the Internet and human-rights issues in countries where Google conducts business. Google’s policy in China, where search engines are required by law to omit certain content, is to warn users when information is missing in search results but ultimately complies with China’s censorship rules. Shareholders and amnesty groups continue to push Google to improve its policies in countries known for human rights abuses and limits on freedom of speech. Also presented were discussions on Google’s continual efforts to improve its search technologies, its acquisition of display ad company DoubleClick and the shift to Web-based computing, and most recently regarding its investment in the Clearwire/WiMAX Internet access plan.
MySpace has announced an initiative called “Data Availability” set to roll out over the coming weeks that will allow users to transfer information and make automatic photo, basic profile information, MySpace TV videos and friend network updates from their Myspace account to other participating Web sites. Partners include Twitter, Yahoo, eBay and Photobucket. Data availability will enable users to easily control what information they want to share with settings available at the MySpace Web site. MySpace hopes that the move aimed at enabling users to share data openly and with ease will encourage users to continue to store all their core data at MySpace to begin with.
