PrimeTime Decline: Internet Creates Shift In Viewership Patterns

Consumer television viewing trends are shifting with the growing usage of TiVo and other digital video recorders, streaming video on the Internet, and cable video on demand. While overall usage of television remains steady, primetime television viewers have declined by 6 million this May compared to a year earlier, according to Neilson ratings. This has posed a new set of challenges for television Networks, that typically create a primetime lineup schedule to present to advertisers, and which are now faced with the task of creating new avenues for generating revenue. In response to the changes, General Electric unit NBC last week started streaming some episodes of its programs to the Apple iPhone. HBO, for the first time has reportedly agreed to sell downloads of individual episodes of its shows when the shows are released on DVD. In a departure from its standard price of $1.99 per television episode, Apple has agreed to make HBO shows available on a sliding scale, at a more expensive price.

Mobile Phone Feature Advancements For iPhone & Blackberry Announced

Research In Motion’s Blackberry has partnered to bring Windows Live Services to the BlackBerry Line, including Windows Live Messenger and better integration of Windows Live Hotmail. Blackberry released its new Balckberry Bold model, which along with Blackberry 7000 and 8000 lines, will be the first to ship with the Windows Live services. This is the third major distribution deal Microsoft has done for Hotmail and Messenger on mobile phone platforms. Meanwhile, Google has announced the release of a new beta version of its Reader application designed for the iPhone and other mobile phones with advanced browsers. Google Reader is an RSS program that alerts users of new content on favorite news sites and blogs and lets them easily share points of interest with friends and family.
