Google Extends & Expands Online-Video Lead: comScore
According to new figures released by Web analysis firm comScore, Google has expanded its already dominant presence in the area of online video, serving 38 percent of the 11.5 billion online videos watched by US Internet users in March, up 2.6 percent from February. YouTube accounted for 98 percent of the Google total. Coming in second was Fox Interactive Media with 4.2 percent market share, followed by Yahoo, Viacom, and Microsoft. The total number of videos watched grew 13 percent from February 2008 and 64 percent since a year ago March, according to comScore.
Google Announces 50 Applications For Android Mobile Operating System
Google’s Android Developer challenge, a contest that encourages amateurs and entrepreneurs to submit applications to Google for the chance to win cash prizes, has spawned 50 applications that Google plans to support on its Android open source mobile platform. In March, Apple, along with Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers launched its own $100 million fund to encourage iPhone developers. On Monday, Research In Motion and Thomson Reuters pledged $150 million to support developers of BlackBerry applications. While the iPhone is dominant in music and multimedia and the BlackBerry is unmatched in e-mail, Google hopes developers will be able to build applications that will set it apart from its competitors.
EveryScape Goes Global with Video Outsourcing, Competes with Google Streetviews
Local video tour start up EveryScape is aiming to take on Google Streetview Maps with the announcement of its EveryScape Ambassador program, in which trained individuals will create content for destination sites as well as local businesses in an effort to expand the Web site offerings. EveryScape hopes to set itself apart from Google Streetview Maps by providing a more niche, purpose driven service that lets business organizations and consumers build and share their world the way they see it. One part of the service offers users the ability to create what it calls Scape Memos, or privately help Scapes for chosen locations that can be shared with users friends via email, Facebook, or LinkedIn.
