Google Search On Pace To Surpass Microsoft Windows By 2009
According to estimates based on quarterly revenue figures, Google’s search business is on pace to become larger and more profitable than Microsoft Windows, which has historically been the most profitable and legendary monopoly in history. Even combined with Microsoft’s wildly profitable Office product, Google, already in control with its AdSense advertising program, has been pushing for adoption of its Google Apps web-based products to compete with Microsoft Office. Google search is expected to surpass Microsoft Windows in size and profitability by early 2009, at the latest.
Following the announcement by Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt last month in which he said finding a way to make money off its popular video sharing site YouTube is Google’s “highest priority” this year, Google announced an advertising product on Tuesday called buzz targeting. Aimed at capitalizing on viral videos, the product uses an algorithm to determine videos on the verge of spreading rapidly on the YouTube Web site and places overlay ads on the bottom. For now, videos eligible for the ad placement product include those submitted by YouTube content partners, including professional producers of content such as studios, record labels and TV networks and excludes random user generated content. Lions Gate was the first advertiser to sign up, using buzz targeting to promote a film, The Forbidden Kingdom, on 500 different videos.
