Yahoo SearchMonkey Customized Search Official Launch
Yahoo’s SearchMonkey Developer Program has officially launched, enabling developers to begin building applications that enhance the usefulness and relevance of search results. Site owners can share data that enables third party developers to build SearchMonkey applications, which consumers can customize to their search experience. Currently developers can build two types of applications using the SearchMonkey platform. The first called Enhanced Results, point to the site which the result refers to and provides richer, more useful information than standard search results. The second application type is Infobars, which is located below search results and include metadata about the result, such as related links or content, or links for user actions related to the result. To kick off the SearchMonkey launch, Yahoo will hold the SearchMonkey Developer Challenge to recognize innovative applications within four categories: Best Enhanced Result, Best Infobar, Most Innovative Use of Structured Data, Best Data Service, and a Grand Prize. Developers have until June 14th to submit applications for a chance to win up to $10,000.
Data Portability is on the rise with the recent launch of Google Friend Connect, Facebook Connect, and MySpace’s Data Availability meant to provide users the ability to store and share information across multiple Web sites without having to duplicate input. Google hit a snag on Thursday when Facebook suspended Google’s Friend Connect service from accessing Facebook members’ data, because it is said to violate Facebook’s terms of service. In a blog post, Facebook stated that “Friend Connect violates Facebook's terms of service because it redistributes user information from Facebook to other developers without users' knowledge”. Google claims it carefully developed Friend Connect to put users in control of their own information and is currently in discussions with Facebook to find a way in which to reach a satisfactory level of compliance.
