Google Experiments With Adding Display Ads To Image Search
Google is experimenting with the placement of display advertisements that appear next to image search results as part of a new suite of image related experiments. Google hopes that it can benefit from the strategic placement of display ads in the same way it does delivering text advertisements alongside standard search results. The feature, expected to be ready by 2009, is meant to most importantly improve the image search experience and comes as a result of Google’s acquisition of DoubleClick. The display ads will appear in a highlighted box above or alongside organic image results and are differentiated by a yellow background as well as marked as sponsored links.
Google on Monday launched its Google Health service to the public following a successful two month trial in which the Cleveland Clinic found that its patients were eager to use the Google service to store and share personal health records accessible on the Web. Google Health will compete with similar health services such as WebMD and Microsoft’s HealthVault. The potential security and privacy risks associated with sharing personal health information over the Internet and being held by a large technology company had no effect, although some expected otherwise. In Google Health, as in the trial, the company is not selling advertisements. And what information is shared with doctors, clinics or pharmacies is controlled by the individual, according to Google’s vice president of search products, Marissa Mayer.
