Yahoo BrowserPlus, To Bring Desktop Features To Browser

Yahoo is offering a preview of BrowserPlus, a technology for Web browsers that lets developers create rich Web applications with desktop capabilities. The announced release only works on Yahoo sites, although the final version of the software will support any Web site, and helps developers build applications that allow users to do things like drag and drop content from the desktop to Web sites; crop, rotate and filter images from the computer; easily upload files and receive native desktop notifications while inside the browser, according to Yahoo. The core feature of BrowserPlus applications is that they can be added without having to restart the browser or reload a page. So developers will be able to add new features to their BrowserPlus apps and they will automatically update. Yahoo BrowserPlus will compete with other recently unveiled offerings, including Microsoft's Silverlight, Adobe's AIR Adobe Integrated Runtime, and Prism from the Mozilla Foundation.

Google Earth And The Browser

In more developer related news, Google has announced the release of Google Earth API and associated browser plug in to enable Web developers to embed Google Earth inside any Web page and turn pages into 3D map applications, much like developers can already do with Google Maps. As a result, Web users can now expect to see Google Earth on various Web sites around the web. Google Earth API, unveiled May 28th at Google I/O Conference in San Francisco, is the latest to join the Google API family, which also includes Google Maps API and the Google Earth Client.
