Microsoft Wins Search Distribution Deal With HP

In a victory for Microsoft, it today announced a distribution deal with PC manufacturer Hewlett Packard, to install a custom Live Search-enabled toolbar using Silverlight, its online multimedia platform. The distribution deal includes all HP consumer PCs shipped in North America, starting in January 2009. The toolbar will include tabs and buttons that point to HP products and services, such as online photo service Snapfish. As part of the deal, the default search engine setting in the browser on all HP consumer PCs will also be set to Microsoft Live Search. This is the largest search distribution deal yet for Microsoft, which is attempting to gain Internet search share, and catch up to number one Google and number two Yahoo. Microsoft will displace Yahoo, which landed a similar arrangement with HP in 2006.

Minnesota Town Tells Google To Get Out

Google isn’t a stranger to receiving complaints about its Google Maps Street View feature that provides users with 360 degree panoramic views from a street angle. However, in a first, an entire town in Minnesota has requested that Google remove views of its streets and homes from the Google service. North Oaks is a private community of about 4,500 residents, that boasts privately owned roads, and based off a letter sent to Google in January, private is how city officials plan to keep it. Google has since removed the images, just as it does when individuals make the request.
