Google CEO: 'Moral Imperative' Beyond Cash Incentive
Beyond the obvious financial incentive Google has to make sure advertising can support online publishers, Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt in a recent interview with New Yorker magazine, cited moral reasons as motivation for wanting to help media companies boost their floundering ad business, specifically on the Internet. Google hopes that the purchase of display ad company Double Click, acquired last March, will help Google ensure advertising can support companies that supply high-quality content, such as newspapers. The mention of morality, stems from Google’s “don’t be evil” motto, which is a prerequisite for decisions made at Google. Schmidt went on to say, "The goal of the company isn't to monetize everything. The goal is to change the world," adding, “for the better.”
Real estate Web site Zillow.com founder has developed a job and career Web site called Glassdoor.com that aims to bring the secrecy of salaries and thoughts about management at specific companies to the forefront, by gathering and posting anonymously shared information from current and former employees. Glassdoor’s is free ad supported Web site, and apart from a preview of salary data and company reviews for Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and Cisco Systems, visitors have to submit a review or salary data in order to access what others have submitted. The Web site could provide a number of things for both employers and employees, including more insight for employers and leverage in salary negotiations for employees. So far, the site has gathered about 2,000 salary reports and 1,300 employee-written reviews for more than 250 companies, many of them in the high-tech and financial industries.
