Yahoo Partnerships Expand Mobile Search Service & Advertising Reach

Yahoo has expanded its mobile search service reach, which will give it a larger foothold in the emerging mobile advertising market, with a partnership to include six more telecom companies in Asia, bringing its total partnerships to 60 worldwide, and giving Yahoo the power to reach 600 million more subscribers. Yahoo oneSearch will become the featured search technology on the mobile Internet search pages of service providers in India, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Taiwan. Yahoo is also offering localized versions of its Go 3.0 voice search technology in India, Southeast Asia and Australia, along with a local language version for Indonesia and an English version of Yahoo oneSearch with voice that recognizes regional accents. Yahoo will also provide mobile display advertising on handsets for Maxis of Malaysia and Idea Cellular in India, as part of a strategic mobile advertising partnership forged with the two companies.

Blogger Arrests On The Rise: World Information Access Report 2008

According to the World Information Access Report, as of 2003, 64 people have been arrested because of what they have written on their blogs or websites in countries where freedom of speech is not a constitutional right. The reason for the arrests, separated in the report by categories, include blogging with regards to violation of cultural norms, social protest, public policy, political figures and exposing corruption or human rights violations. 36 known arrests were made just last year, a record high, in countries with repressive governments including China, Egypt, and Iran, according to University of Washington researchers who conducted the report. Even liberal democracies including France, Canada, the USA, and UK have made arrests for certain blogging activity, albeit because of threats to personal safety as opposed to violation of government rule. As Blogs grow in popularity, although some may refrain for fear of persecution, so long as the Internet is available, others may continue to use the medium to speak out.
