Online Ad Sales Decline For First Time In Three Years: IAB Report
Spending on online advertising declined in the first quarter of 2008 for the first time in three years, compared to the fourth quarter of 2007, according to a report by the Interactive Advertising Bureau. Despite the decline, the $5.8 billion spent on advertising in Q1 2008, was up 18.2 percent from a year earlier, and the second highest ever recorded for a three month period, following the $5.9 billion spent on online advertising in the preceding fourth quarter. A dip in the first quarter could be a result of stronger fourth quarter holiday sales. Otherwise, the drop in numbers may suggest the overall economic slowdown is finally affecting online advertising.
Microsoft Purchases Television Ad-placement Company Navic Systems
Microsoft continues to make acquisitions to broaden its reach in advertising, following its unsuccessful bid to buy Yahoo earlier this year, this time with the acquisition of Navic Systems, a company that facilitates advertisers with placing targeted, interactive television ads through data compiled from cable set top boxes and other sources. Navic will be part of Microsoft’s Advertiser and Publisher Solutions Group, an Internet service that Microsoft hopes will allow marketers to place ads across a range of media outlets, including online services, Internet search, videogames and TV. The acquisition puts Microsoft in competition with Google TV Ads Program that lets advertisers create TV commercials and choose the networks and times that they air by filling out an online form.
