Business Social Networking Firm LinkedIn Valued at $1 Billion
LinkedIn, the social networking web site for professionals, is now valued at $1 billio, following a new round of financing led by Bain Capital Ventures equity firm that contributed a $53 million investment. In comparison to other social networking sites, the valuation is more than the $580 million that the News Corporation paid for MySpace in 2005, yet less than the $15 billion value assigned to Facebook last year when Microsoft bought a minority stake. LinkedIn, which says it is already profitable, will use the investment to make acquisitions, expand its overseas operations and improve the service for its over 23 million professionals users.
Scripps Networks, home to HGTV, Food Network, DIY Network and Fine Living Network, has forged a partnership with AOL in attempt to achieve greater online presence by making clips of its lifestyle video content available for distribution across AOL's network of sites, including AOL Video, AOL Food, AOL Home and Slashfood. In addition, Scripps videos clips will be found through AOL's video search, powered by AOL's Truveo video search engine.
Local Search & Social Networking Firm Center'd Launches
New web site Center’d, which launched today, aims to provide an easier process for planning events, of any size, with the added input of a users personal network. Center’d features tools including the ability to take polls, task management and volunteer sign up capabilities, connection management and calendar sharing, and the ability to explore neighborhoods for planning purposes. The company is headed by former executives from Yahoo and Microsoft, and is available in what it calls first draft form, otherwise known as beta test form. The company describes the site as, "the only one on the Web that provides an integrated way to manage all the core elements of local planning: picking a place, agreeing on a time, selecting service providers, sending invites, managing volunteers, hosting and communicating."
