Visa Puts $2 Million In Facebook Advertisements

Credit card company Visa is setting up a small business network on Facebook and paying $2 million worth of advertising, or $100 advertising credit each to the first 20,000 U.S. businesses that download the application to join the network. Visa will also promote the new Facebook service in a multimedia marketing campaign beginning next month. By joining Visa’s Facebook network, businesses gain access to tools and tips on attracting new customers, ways to trim costs and increase profits, and will be able to communicate with other business owners to share ideas or even negotiate deals. Google will provide maps, calendar, and a new template for creating expense sheets and business cards as part of the service. The Wall Street Journal and Entrepreneur magazine will contribute articles addressing questions posed by businesses that belong to the network. Facebook hopes that coupled with Visa’s marketing expertise, and the advertising credit offer, small businesses will find success running trial marketing campaigns and continue to advertise on Facebook.

Google Launches Map Maker Map-building Application

Google has launched a Map Maker map building application that allows users to contribute and edit map data including roads, points of interest and regions and hopes to enlist locals or others familiar with countries such as Cyprus, Iceland and Pakistan to fill in the missing data.

Ask.com Parent IAC Dividend Payouts

IAC/Interactive, as part of the process of spinning off four of its operating business units into new publicly traded entities, will receive a dividend payment of nearly $750 million from its Ticketmaster unit, as well as yet to be disclosed amounts from retail unit HSN and vacation timeshare company Interval International. The fourth IAC unit to be spun off, mortgage-lending service Lending Tree, faced with challenges from the housing market slump will not be paying a dividend to IAC. Dividend payments are a common way for conglomerates spinning off units to transfer cash to the parent company and in this case, the payments will strengthen parent company IAC’s balance sheet moving forward.
