Charter Halts Ad Target Program Per Customer Privacy Concerns
As Google rolls out its Ad Planner ad program to help advertisers and agencies target specific audiences based in part off data it collects from its web servers, cable operator Charter Communications is halting plans to launch a pilot program using technology from NebuAd to track the Web use of high speed Internet subscribers. Charter had planned to begin the program as early as this month in 4 test markets to produce enough information for advertisers to aim online ads at individual customers based on their viewing habits. However, Charter is now holding off on its original plan due to customers expressed privacy concerns, as well as the reaction from Congressmen urging Charter to drop the plan. The move comes as a set back for cable operators as targeted Web advertising efforts continue to ramp up for Internet search firms in attempt to bring in more advertising revenue.
