AOL Expands Services To Latin America
AOL today will expand its service beyond the United States, Europe and India with the launch of localized sites tailored to the respective Latin American markets of Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Venezuela. The move by AOL comes as part of the company’s global business strategy to gain worldwide presence by the end of 2009. Among the features to be included in the service are free email with unlimited storage, AIM instant messaging, and Truveo video search, as well as relevant, regional content related to news, sports and other topics of interest. In addition, AOL will leverage its worldwide distribution partnership with HP to deliver co-branded, local language portals for the four Latin American countries.
Facebook And Slide's "Top Friends", Suffer Outages
Social networking site Facebook, and its third-largest application, Slide's "Top Friends", have suffered outages. Until late Wednesday when Facebook suspended the popular top friends application, a security hole in the application let anyone browse partial profiles of anyone else on Facebook who added Top Friends to their page, revealing that persons birthday, gender and relationship status. With a person’s Facebook ID number and a little know-how, the privacy of some Facebook users was compromised. The incident raises questions about the level of security users can expect on Facebook, which gives anyone who signs up as a developer access to the personal information of those people who add their application.
