Microsoft Founder Bill Gates Bids Farewell
Today Microsoft bids farewell to its longtime leader and founder Bill Gates who is departing from his full time position after almost thirty years as chairman of the world’s biggest software company. The foundation for Microsoft was established in 1980 when Gates created the PC-DOS operating system for IBM. Gates retained the copyright for the product, and followed with a launch of Windows operating system in 1985, which is still used on 90 percent of the world’s computers. Gates single largest mistake may have been his failure to create a dedicated search engine early in his Microsoft career, as Microsoft now struggles to find its place in a marketplace that has seen a shift in power from PCs to the Internet. Gates will leave Microsoft to focus on his role as a philanthropist, leading the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, but will still remain on Microsoft's board in a non-executive role, as the company's largest shareholder.
Google is testing out a new layout on its personalized iGoogle homepage service that includes a new left hand sidebar with both a Gtalk instant messaging widget, Gmail email widget, and a display of unread Gmail messages. What’s new is an “Update” widget that gives updates on what friends are doing around the Internet, similar in style to Facebook’s news feed. Internet search companies, including Google, MySpace and Facebook continue to compete to become users hub on the Internet, as a place to store and update personal information and communicate with friends.
