Yahoo Announces Winners of SearchMonkey Developer Challenge
Yahoo has announced the winners of its SearchMonkey Developer Challenge, kicked off last May. Five winners were chosen for the development of innovative applications built on Yahoo’s open platform. The winning applications, meant to enhance the usefulness and relevance of search results, were chosen in four categories, with one $10,000 grand prize winner awarded. StumbledUpon won in the Innovative Structured Data category for an Infobar that aggregates ratings, reviews, tags as well as links to other users who like the web page. Boorah won in the Best Infobar category for an app that offers aggregated information about local restaurants along with reviews, ratings, online reservations, discounts & carryout options. Computer Scientist Greg Schechter won in the Best Enhanced Result category for an enhanced result that delivers enhanced search results for Xbox.com with photos, prices and release dates for Xbox games. David Hinckley won in the Best Data Service category, wrote a data service that allows other SearchMonkey developers to showcase rich results from his site in their own apps. The Grand Prize was awarded to Marco Vitanza who developed a Blogspot Infobar, which displays links to recent posts for all Blogspot search results.
Apple: 1 Million iPhones Sold, 10 Million App Store Downloads
Following the release of the Apple iPhone 3G last Friday July 11th, Apple sold its one-millionth 3G phone Sunday, three days after its debut, according to a company press release. Despite that the iPhone 3G is now more widely available than the original, this time in 21 countries, it took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, according to Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Apple also reported 10 million applications have been downloaded from the App Store since its launch Thursday July 10th. There are currently about 800 applications available for download in the App Store, over 200 of which are free; at launch, there were around 500.
