Video Search Engine Blinkx Rolls Out Red Label Program
Video search engine Blinkx has debuted a new program called Red Label, in which it is opening up its Application Programming Interface to other websites, granting access to Blinkx search results and sharing in any resulting revenue. Websites with 10,000 searches per day can have access to Blinkx for free, while those with 10,000 or more searches per day are asked to monetize the service and share revenue. Blinkx has partnered with Ask.com and Lycos on search deals of past, but with the Red Label project making the process easier, Blinkx hopes to forge more partnerships moving forward, starting with MSN UK and Russia’s largest portal Rambler. Blinkx searches videos by examining textual metadata such as titles, tags, and descriptions that accompany videos, and also by performing speech recognition to convert audio to text and by visual recognition that can recognize text and sometimes famous faces in the videos.
Google CEO Eric Schmidt announced its YouTube unit has forged a deal with Lions Gate Media, enabling users to upload scenes from Lions Gate movies that will be accessible through a new channel YouTube will launch in the near future. Under the agreement, the clips will be accompanied by ads. This is the first of many partnerships Google hopes to forge with other Hollywood studios.
