FCC To Uphold Action Against Comcast
On Friday the Federal Communications Commission is likely to take action against cable provider Comcast for violating its open Internet principles by blocking some peer to peer traffic on its network, namely customers using file sharing services such as BitTorrent. In the action outlined, the FCC would require Comcast to stop hindering peer-to-peer applications, to disclose to the FCC how the practice has been used, and to notify customers about other network management practices it adopts in the future. The outcome of Friday is important as the debate heats up between open Internet advocates pushing for network neutrality and Internet Service providers that are increasingly faced with the challenge of managing the exponential growth of traffic on their networks. Also expected, the FCC will lay out key guidelines for broadband network operators as to what is considered "reasonable" ways to manage network traffic, yet its still not clear if the FCC has any authority to enforce its ruling. The FCC decision is likely to be challenged in court; if upheld, it would affirm the agency's right to police Net neutrality violations and make sure Internet providers don't interfere with online traffic.
Yahoo Search Enhanced To Include Breaking News Coverage
Yahoo search has announced some enhancements to its service meant to deliver breaking news more quickly in within Yahoo search results. Improvements were made to better detect when a search query is about a breaking news topic, and to deliver breaking news topics accordingly within search result listings for a more thorough search experience.
