GeoEye To Provide Google With Highest Resolution Commercial Color Imagery
It looks like Google Maps and Google Earth are about to get a high resolution overhaul. Under a new deal inked by GeoEye and Google, the $502 million high resolution GeoEye 1 satellite will provide imagery exclusively to Google Earth and Google Maps 45 - 60 days following the satellite launch scheduled September 4th. That means within the next few months, Google will be able to provide the highest resolution commercial color imagery available on the market. Google plans to continue using imagery from other providers, including GeoEye’s rival Digital Globe, but is showing its support to GeoEye by placing its logo on the rocket that will launch the 4,300 pound satellite from Vanderberg Air Force Base in California.
