Yahoo Verizon Extend Web Portal Deal
Yahoo will once again team with Verizon in a distribution deal that dates back to 2005, in which the Web company and telecommunications company will provide new users who sign up for high speed Internet with Verizon, a co-branded Verizon – Yahoo portal start page powered by Yahoo search, email and instant messaging products, along with a customizable personal assistant to manage e-mail, horoscopes, weather predictions, and top news picks. Yahoo beat out Microsoft as the preferred choice offered to customers as a result of generating a higher amount of shared revenue for Verizon. Under the deal, Yahoo will give Verizon a cut of the revenue generated from search and display ads and premium services. MSN and AOL will also be offered as alternative options, but secondary to Yahoo. The deal is a win for Yahoo, which hopes to attract more eyeballs to Yahoo properties and to sell more Internet advertising as a result. However, the deal does not apply to mobile subscribers and Verizon is reportedly negotiating a separate search deal with Google that would make the Internet giant the default search provider on Verizon cellphones. What’s more is that Google could potentially be added to the list of broadband portal options when consumers sign up for Verizon Internet service, albeit below Yahoo, yet posing an additional competitive threat.
