Mountain View, California-based Google has begun an initiative that gives users of its popular YouTube video sharing Web site a click to buy option for purchasing certain music and games at Amazon or iTunes, the Internet search giant announced Tuesday. The move came as Google's latest attempt to make money from the video property it purchased in 2006. "Today, we're taking our first steps to providing YouTube users with this kind of instant gratification, by adding 'click-to-buy' links to the watch pages of thousands of YouTube partner videos," YouTube product manager Thai Tran and Glenn Brown, the company's strategic partner development manager wrote Tuesday in a jointly authored message on the Google blog announcing the changes. Certain video game titles such as Electronic Arts' Spore were to sport the new click to buy download option, shown below an authorized YouTube video clip taken from the games, Google said. The program was initially rolled out to users in the United States, however Google said that it expected to expand the initiative globally over the coming months. The ability to generate revenue through advertising has long been a goal at Google, which purchased YouTube, the world's largest video sharing Web site, for $1.65 billion in stock compensation in 2006.
