Internet search giant Google has released the source code to its ambitious mobile computer operating system Android, fulfilling a promise made in November 2007 when the Mountain View, California-based company launched the smartphone OS. The release into the Open Source community was made Tuesday by Google's Jason Chen in a message posted on the Android developer's blog. "Today, we're making what might just be the most exciting announcement of all: we and our Open Handset Alliance partners have now released the source code for Android," Chen said. The release was done through the Android Open Source Project, which requires individual contributors to the project to agree to a license grant, Google said. Google launched Android to allow cell phones to use the numerous online applications the search giant has developed over the past several years, and the Open Handset Alliance that is responsible for developing and promoting Android included more than two dozen large mobile operators, device manufacturers, and companies that make software and semiconductors. Numerous projects have been released or were under development for use with Android-based cell phones, including a mobile banking initiative announced by Visa in September. Related Links :
