Redmond, Washington-based software maker Microsoft has begun a public test of a new online tool for customizing search results and sharing them with social networks Web sites, with the announcement of "U Rank." The prototype tool offered users a variety of ways to change how Web search results were displayed using Microsoft Live Search, the third most used search engine. The U Rank tool has given users the ability to share their custom search layouts with contacts from social networking sites. The Live Search addition continued a series of upgrades Microsoft has made to its search engine in order to better compete with Mountain View, California-based search leader Google. Last month Microsoft showed the first additions to Live Search based on technology resulting from its July purchase of search engine startup Powerset. Those changes to Live Search included better handling of search results taken from user generated Web encyclopedia Wikipedia. Related Links :
