AUSTIN, Texas - Sunnyvale, California-based Internet portal and search engine company Yahoo announced an agreement Wednesday with Dallas-based Belo Corporation, one of the nation's largest media companies, that will see local news video from 13 of Belo's television stations exclusively shown within the respective local news pages of Yahoo News. The agreement to broaden local news coverage at Yahoo, already a top news site on the Internet, is expected to place dozens of local news video segments daily on Yahoo's local news pages, and will show Belo's videos to all Yahoo users when major news occurs, the companies said in a joint press release issued Wednesday. Agreement Details Forthcoming Belo and Yahoo will share advertising revenue generated from the local news video clips, which will be shown on Yahoo's local news pages in the following markets: | San Antonio, Texas | | Austin, Texas | | Seattle / Tacoma, Washington | | Charlotte, North Carolina | | Houston, Texas | | Spokane, Washington | | Hampton/Norfolk, Virginia | | St. Louis, Missouri | | Phoenix, Arizona | | New Orleans, Louisiana | | Louisville, Kentucky | | Tucson, Arizona | | Portland, Oregon | | | The agreement to expand Yahoo's local news television coverage will not apply to Belo's television stations in Dallas, Texas or Boise, Idaho, the companies said. The video partnership will give Yahoo News local video coverage in 18 of the top 25 markets in the United States, the companies said. Further financial details of the agreement were not available. Expanding on Existing Agreements Yahoo first partnered with Belo, a Fortune 1000 company with more than 7,000 employees and approximately $1.6 billion in annual revenues, in 2005 when the companies agreed to share job postings between Yahoo's HotJobs service and listings in Belo's newspapers. The companies have worked together in other ways since then, including as partners in a larger newspaper consortium of some 550 daily and weekly newspapers put out by 22 newspaper publishing companies, encompassing the following areas: | Graphical advertising technology | | Content distribution | | Search | | Cross-selling online advertising inventory | Belo operates more than 30 Web sites in conjunction with its television stations, and together these rank as the first or second most popular properties in 11 of the 13 markets covered under Wednesday's agreement. Belo also holds cable and interactive media assets in addition to its television and newspaper properties, operating primarily in Texas, the Northwest, the Southwest, the Mid-Atlantic and in Rhode Island. Among Belo's 20 television stations are six in the top 15 largest broadcasting markets in the U.S., along with six cable news stations, the companies said. Belo's top newspapers are The Dallas Morning News, The Denton Record-Chronicle in Denton, Texas, The Press-Enterprise in Riverside, California, and The Providence Journal in Providence, Rhode Island, and it also publishes a variety of specialty publications. Yahoo Announces News Video Partnership With Belo The addition of Belo's local video news coverage gives Yahoo expanded coverage in a fast growing online area. "Video usage is one of the fastest growing areas in the online space and Belo's television stations and Web sites produce some of the most compelling video in their respective markets," said Belo's chief operating officer Dunia A. Shive. "Given Yahoo!'s leadership in online news, this partnership is yet another way for both companies to offer users a richer online experience while jointly creating business models which recognize that value," said Shive. Yahoo sees the agreement with Belo announced Wednesday as a positive response to demand from its customers. "For many consumers visiting Yahoo! News, there's nothing more relevant than local updates. The addition of local news video from 13 new markets is a huge win for the people who have made Yahoo! News the number one news site on the Internet," said Yahoo News vice president and general manager Alan Warms. "Given the surge in demand for online video on Yahoo! News, and across the Internet, this deal with Belo's television stations makes a lot of sense for our users," added Warms. Related Links:
