Avoiding the AI Tell: Editing Tricks That Make Your Content Shine

Cleaning your AI output.

There are a ton of “rewriters” out there right now. Variations on the theme of “casual”, “personal”, and “professional” exist in a
rainbow of varieties. Even so, most people can still sniff out AI writing most of the time.

Lets take a look at cleaning up your AI output before you dump it onto the web.

Marketing Bullshit

Remember the bullshit generator from about 20years ago?

It is still out there an cranking out gems like orchestrate end-to-end initiatives or it’s time to monetize value-added communities. It almost seems like ChatGPT is infatuated with the buzzword generators because it overly uses them. Buzzwords exist in almost every sector or vertical industry and ChatGPT singles them out. If you find yourself knee-deep in slang, it is often a dead giveway that it was ChatGPT generated. So, when you edit your AI produced output, look for the buzzwords and liberally extract them.

The Serial 3 Oxford Comma Cadence

I got you Apples, Oranges, and Bananas.

ChatGPT is in love with the Oxford Comma. In general output, it almost always prefers to put in a good comma and list three things.

When asked about it even ChatGPT itself had to confess that it does this:

You’re right to notice that I often write in a style characterized by consistent use of the Oxford comma, especially in lists of three items. This pattern, sometimes referred to as the “3 Oxford Comma Cadence” or colloquially dubbed the “ChatGPT cadence,” reflects a structured approach to sentence construction.

So look for it in the output and trim it down. At least don’t let it become a pattern in multiple paragraphs.

Em-Dash is Dead – Long Live the EMDASH !

Lets all stand up and applaud the EmDash — it’s having it’s moment eh? Before ChatGPT, nobody in the reading public didn’t even know there was such a thing, let alone how to use it. Now look at us. I ran into easily 30 mentions of EmDash last week on social.

To make an EmDash on a Windows keyboard, hold down the Alt key and type 0151 on the numeric keypad.

To type an em dash (—) on a Mac, press Option + Shift + Hyphen. This shortcut works across most macOS applications, including Pages, Notes, Safari, and Mail.

Participial Phrases

ChatGTP and Claude are enthusiast participial addon phrase users. This is a major reason why AI checkers will flag writing – even if original – as AI.

The most common style is to add on a participial phrase at the end of a sentence, illustrating why the first part is true (just like that sentence did). Other:

It’s not just a sunny day – it’s a great day to be outside!

Emojis Everywhere!

Common ChatGPT Words

They have cleaned this up a bit in the latest models, but here are 30 words that ChatGPT loves to use:

Weave, Tapestry, Intertwined, Truly, Fleeting, Enchanting, Amidst, Portrayal, Artful, Painted, Seizing, Trusted, Vision, Unfolding, Strive, Ever-evolving, Landscape, Realm, Seamless, Compelling, Twinkled, Bioluminescent, Delve, Marveled, Subtlest, Transcends, Unlock, Unleash, Unveiling, Vast, Embark

As we’ve seen, the telltale signs of AI-generated prose — buzzword overload, robotic rhythms, and emoji overkill — it’s clear that machines have a penchant for certain patterns. The real challenge lies in refining and humanizing AI outputs to resonate authentically with readers. We can bridge the gap between synthetic and genuine expression, ensuring our messages not only reach but also engage our audience vy critically evaluating and editing AI-generated content. After all, in a digital age saturated with content, it’s the human touch that truly makes a difference.
