OpenAI’s June 13 update quietly rolled out one of the most meaningful improvements to ChatGPT’s core functionality to how it handles search. Whether you’re using ChatGPT for research, writing help, or troubleshooting, these changes make the interaction feel faster, smarter, and more useful.
What’s New: Smarter, More Context-Aware Search
The new release is better at understanding your intent, following instructions, and adapting to longer conversations. For those that have used ChatGPT as a search engine, and you’ve ever had to rephrase a question multiple times or gotten generic answers, those days are (mostly) behind us.
Key changes:
- Better comprehension of complex questions
- Improved memory of earlier messages in long threads
- Stronger ability to follow detailed instructions similar to deep research.
Want to See When OpenAI Bots Crawl Your Site?
If you’re a webmaster or site owner, it’s a good time to review your server logs and see how ChatGPT is gathering information. OpenAI uses several different bots – including ChatGPT-User
, GPTBot
, and SearchGPT
– to crawl the web.
You can learn how to detect, identify, and manage those crawlers in our full guide:

Behind-the-Scenes Search Upgrades
For tougher or multi-layered questions, ChatGPT can now run multiple searches in the background automatically. That means better answers with less prompting on your end.
You can also:
- Upload an image and search the web based on that image
- Rely less on repeating yourself in follow-up prompts

A Few Quirks Still Being Smoothed Out
There are a couple of known limitations with the new system:
- Response length may be longer than expected
- “Chain of thought” reasoning might appear on simple queries (a fix is in progress)
- Hallucinations still happen – always verify important outputs
Why This Matters
This isn’t just a UX tweak. These changes move ChatGPT closer to being a true digital assistant that can reason across long threads, shift with your needs, and proactively search better. If you haven’t tried the new search experience yet – now’s the time to see what’s changed.
