  • The first three “search engines” were called Archie (for Gopher), Veronica (net wide), and Jughead (another Gopher).
  • The first image ever uploaded to the web was of a comedy band in the early 90’s (stylized above).
  • Blackle search engine “The Dark Side of Searching” was a search engine with a black background, based on the idea that displaying darker colors would save energy on CRT monitors. While the energy-saving claims were debated, especially with the advent of LCD screens, Blackle remains active, promoting energy awareness.
  • (shake head) yes, there was once (like 50 times) a search engine launched to challenge Google? lol
  • Yahoo! is actually an acronym for “Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle”?
  • Lycos’ mascot: Lycos, one of the early search engines, was named after the wolf spider (Lycosidae) which actively hunts for its prey rather than building webs and waiting. They used a black lab named “Lycos” as their mascot.
  • Excite had the opportunity to purchase Google for just $750,000 in 1999 but turned it down. Google is now worth over a trillion dollars.
  • Googles earliest homepage in late 1998 had links to Stanford Search and Linux Search.
