Google Caves to Pressure – will not Deprecate Third Party Cookies

In light of the DOJ antitrust trial, Google’s latest Privacy Sandbox update signals a pause in major changes to 3rd-party cookie handling. Marketers and affiliate sites relying on cookies for tracking and attribution should note:

Third-Party Cookies Stay (For Now):
Google will not roll out a new standalone prompt restricting third-party cookies in Chrome. Users will maintain control through existing Privacy and Security settings. This delays a significant disruption to cookie-based tracking for affiliate and ad-based models.

Incognito Mode Tightens:
Chrome’s Incognito mode will continue blocking third-party cookies by default. Google plans to add IP Protection in Incognito by Q3 2025, which could limit IP-based tracking there.

Privacy Sandbox Role Recalibrated:
With no immediate shift on cookies, Privacy Sandbox tools (like Topics API and Protected Audience) may evolve differently. Google plans to gather feedback and share an updated roadmap, hinting that Sandbox APIs might be repositioned or delayed.

Takeaway for Marketers/Affiliates:
You have more time to adapt your tracking models before cookies are phased out. Keep testing Privacy Sandbox alternatives, but cookie-based attribution remains viable short-term. Stay alert for the updated Sandbox roadmap, as it could reshape tracking strategies down the line.

This move may reflect regulatory pressure (like the DOJ trial), signaling Google’s cautious approach to avoid further antitrust scrutiny while balancing industry needs.
