Friday is referred to politics as “taking out the trash” day or the “Friday News Dump” where any bad stories get released as nobody reads on the weekend and no one remembers them by Monday. Google has held a weekly master class this last couple years in the Friday Dumpster.
This week, Google retooled: google.com/ai. On the surface it looks like a simple branding move, but under the hood it signals a deeper shift in what “search” even means.
As we move forward with Google’s Final Solution – this changes the social contract of the web. Search engines were supposed to connect users to websites. AI Mode keeps users inside Google’s walls, repackaging your work as if it were theirs. The new link isn’t a tweak—it’s a flag planted in the ground.
What Site Owners Should Do
- Double down on channels you control: newsletters, communities, direct traffic.
- Keep producing authoritative content, but don’t expect Google to reward it with traffic.
- Document and call out on social media, all AI misrepresentations when you find them -hallucinations are going to hurt trust, and proof of errors matters.
- Brace-yourself, Google is on a path to turn this into the default mode.

And like that, we see that some Google employees are insinuating that this will become default mode.
