Google is waking up to a trifecta of global headaches today – each one a bit more absurd or than the last. From the courtroom to the classroom the tech giant is at the center of controversy, chaos, and questionable decisions.
1. $50 Million Settlement Over Alleged Racial Discrimination
In a major legal development, Google has agreed to pay $50 million to settle a lawsuit brought by April Curley. She is a former employee who claimed the company fostered a racially biased corporate culture. Curley was originally hired to recruit from historically Black colleges. She alleges she was:
- Consistently denied promotions
- Stereotyped as the “angry Black woman”
- Terminated after preparing a report on racial bias inside the company
This isn’t the first time Big Tech has faced scrutiny for workplace inequality, but the size of the settlement – and the very specific allegations – seem to spotlight ongoing issues in Silicon Valley hiring and culture. It’s also another reminder that DEI efforts can’t be superficial.

2. Mexico Sues Google Over a Map Label
sigh – in a geopolitical twist worthy of satire, Mexico is suing Google over how it labels the Gulf of Mexico. According to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Google changed th Classaction.org Begins Campaign to Organize Advertisers into Mass Arbitration Groupe label to “Gulf of America” based on a Trump-era executive order.
Mexico is calling it an “inaccurate and politically motivated renaming” that erases both geographic fact and national identity. If this sounds somewhat petty, it really is not. Maps are powerful and labels shape perception. When those labels appear on Google Maps – the most widely used mapping platform on the planet – they carry weight! This case could open the door to broader conversations about digital cartography and singular state sovereignty in the age of tech algorithmic platforms.

3. TikTok Challenge Sparks Chromebook Arson Attempts
Yikes! In the “what could possibly go wrong / hold my beer” department, a new TikTok trend is encouraging kids to jam metal into Chromebook ports to start fires – yes, actual flames – using their school-issued devices.
The goal is apparently to create sparks and smoke for views. The challenge has gone fairly viral enough that schools are stuck issuing warnings and IT departments are probably rethinking their hardware choices.
While TikTok deserves some of blame (come on now, if it wasn’t TT, it would be insta, or X…or whatever is next), the common thread here is Google once again being the default infrastructure in a system that wasn’t designed to handle today’s fun breed of chaos. When your devices are in every classroom, you’re also carrying the burden of every tech-related incident – whether it’s fire or misinformation.
