Microsoft has unveiled MAI-Image-1, its first fully in-house text-to-image model. This marks a shift from relying solely on OpenAI. The model debuted in the top 10 on LMArena, a public benchmark that ranks AI image generators through blind human voting.

MAI-Image-1 produces fast, photorealistic images with stronger control over lighting, texture, and realism than MS’s previous integrations of DALL-E. Microsoft says the model was built for creative pros and trained with a deliberate and ethical dataset to minimize bias and repetition.

The launch signals Microsoft’s big push to build its own generative AI stack. This is  following the release of MAI-Voice-1 and MAI-1-preview - its language model. MAI-Image-1 will soon power Copilot, Bing Image Creator, and other Microsoft tools.
