Microsoft posted new recommendations to help website owners and marketers make their content more eligible for inclusion in AI-generated answers across Bing, Copilot, and Microsoft Start. The October 2025 blog post, "Optimizing Your Content for Inclusion in AI Search Answers," explains how Microsoft's AI systems identify, evaluate, and surface information from web pages, and what content formats tend to perform best. The company says referrals from its AI experiences have increased 357% year over year, underscoring the growing role of AI-driven results in online discovery.

The post explains that Microsoft's AI models analyze web content differently than traditional search engines. Instead of ranking entire pages, they break down content into smaller, meaningful sections. Each section is evaluated based on clarity, structure, and its ability to directly answer user intent. That means well-organized, accessible, and factually precise writing increases the chance of inclusion in AI-generated summaries or answers.

To help creators adapt, Microsoft outlined practical guidance on ai search answers optimization -  what to prioritize when :

What to Prioritize:

  • Use clear, descriptive H1, H2, and H3 headings that reflect specific questions or topics.
  • Structure pages with short, well-defined sections that each focus on one idea.
  • Use schema markup (FAQ, HowTo, Product, Review, etc.) to make meaning explicit.
  • Write in direct, factual language that provides definitive information.
  • Include alt text for images and maintain clean, accessible HTML.
  • Keep content current and consistent with authoritative sources.

Things to Avoid:

  • Large blocks of unstructured text without clear section breaks.
  • Hiding important information behind tabs, scripts, or images without alt text.
  • Using vague language, excessive adjectives, or promotional filler.
  • Blocking Bingbot or restricting access to key page elements in robots.txt.
  • Relying on outdated or incomplete metadata and canonical tags.

Microsoft adds that while no formula guarantees inclusion in AI search results, following these practices increases visibility and helps AI systems understand context more accurately. The company describes this shift as an evolution of search optimization - where the goal is no longer only ranking high on results pages, but also being selected as a trustworthy source within AI-generated answers.
