OpenAI introduced Instant Checkout, that allows users to buy products directly inside ChatGPT. The feature is rolling out to U.S. users across Free, Plus, and Pro. At launch it works with Etsy listings, and Shopify merchants is coming soon. Ask for ideas like “gifts for a gardener” or “wireless headphones under $200,” then complete the purchase without leaving the chat - whoa.
The system runs on an open Agentic Commerce Protocol co-developed with the big Stripe. Merchants keep in control of pricing, fulfillment, returns, and the customer relationship, while ChatGPT handles the conversation and routes payments securely to the ecomm producer. OpenAI says users will not pay extra fees to use Instant Checkout, and items enabled for checkout are not boosted above other results.
This is a clear step from recommendation to transaction. If adoption grows, shopping, search, and chat could blend into one flow inside AI interfaces. For more background, see coverage from Reuters and Axios, and the full announcement on OpenAI’s site.
