(update 10/31/24: yes – we called it. SearchGPT was just bolted onto chatGPT bolted onto ChatGPT)
Since it’s launch, SearchGPT by OpenAI has been invite only and reportedly open to only the first 10,000 users. SEO’s have been pining months for SearchGPT to make its long awaied appearance in front of the massive ChatGPT audience. A few people on both TikTok and Twitter are mentioning that the “Find on the Web” option in ChatGPT maybe being tested as a natural location for SearchGPT to show up.
Simply type a backslash “/” into the prompt box for a new popup menu. That Feature three options:
Clicking on Search adds a blue “search” to the prompt box allowing you to search the web. It is using a different index from SearchGPT though. While SearchGPT is obviously using Bings index, ChatGPT “search” is using it’s internal “search the web” option. If you have screenshots rumored briefly on Twitter of SearchGPT being used on that menu – send them to us.
Whereas ChatGPT “Search the Web” prefers the conversational “Wikipedia” style answer:
All this is important as many believe OpenAI will integrate SearchGPT with ChatGPT before the end of the year.
We don’t know what the reach of SearchGPT currently is, but having access to several hundred million users weekly is set to make SearchGPT referrals to website sky rocket.
According to ChatGPT,
The “search the web” feature, enabling real-time internet browsing, was added to ChatGPT in September 2023 for Pro users. OpenAI initially rolled it out as an option for retrieving up-to-date information and quickly integrated it into the “/” menu for easier access in October 2023.
